School themed movies have always been popular in the cinema world - they depict special periods in youth, the difficult process of growing up, and quite often complicated transitions though teenage years. Since the year 2000, several films have maintained this tradition to Hollywood, and have come up with new ideas and some very interesting works that touch every age group.


1. Mean Girls (2004)

«Mean Girls» also gained a very big cult-following since its production and it had this sick humor in addition to some insightful observation of high school life. Directed by Mark Waters and starring Lindsay Lohan, the film narrates simple experiences of high school students and emphasizes on a successful theme of teenage life: lions and other groups of popular students where the main girl Cady Heron becomes trapped. The movie boasts of tight intervals and powerful characters to achieve what the filmmakers proposed, making the film as unique and as hilarious as the high school life is portrayed.

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Penned for screen &directed by Stephen Chbosky, «The perks of being a Wallflower» reflects the complexity of teenage life. In the movie, it portrays life of Charlie, a shy introverted student in high school struggling with issues of friendship, love, and mental issues. Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller together with other stars deliver a strong performance and the movie depicts the high school life touching upon the main issues of teenage people when they try to fit in.

3. Superbad (2007)

«Superbad» is the best high school comedy of the 21st century that tells the kind of story that everyone can relate to. «Superbad», scripted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is a comedy movie featuring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera portraying two high school seniors making the most out of their final days in high school. In this movie, there is gross by body humor as well as tender moments, which gives a realistic depiction of high school experiences and puberty.

4. Lady Bird (2017)

«Lady Bird» is a heartfelt movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig and a very delicate and elaborate depiction of the theme of the combative mother-daughter bond and the issues of adolescence. As we will see the movie is centered in Sacramento in the early twenty-something period and it revolves around the life of Christine «Lady Bird» McPherson in her last year in high school. Starring Saoirse Ronan, this movie is a coming-of-age drama that effectively emphasises the sweet and bitter concept of teenagers leaving their teenage years, but does it in such a unique woof that other viewers can easily relate to it.

5. Eighth Grade (2018)

In his directorial debut, Bo Burnham’s examines life of an average eighth grader growing up in the digital age. It is a drama television of a thirteen year old girl named Kayla Day who is awkward and has social anxiety disorder. Muscling its way to the top, «Eighth Grade» depicts the realistic and often uncomfortable awkwardness that is often most youth nowadays, and watching this film can make any viewer feel the anxiety of school years in their bones. The realistic approach of the picture and its sensitivity solve the problem of devaluation of the genre.
